Hi, Bye, 2016, oil on linen, 70×60 cm

Cherry blossom represents Spring, a time of brand-new starts, particularly in my mind because Asian schools begin their new year in the Spring. But the life of the cherry blossom is very short – their beauty peaks for around two weeks. Friends and family hurriedly plan picnics in celebration of this brief flowering before the blossom starts to fall. The cherry blossoms are beautiful but short-lived, so the end of the blossom is always present even when it is in flower – we are conscious that this is a brief beauty, and so our appreciation is always sentimental. The beauty of flower blossoms comes about smoothly and quietly and goes quickly. This is how life feels to me.
